Everyone should have at least *heard* of Stephen King. He's the top-selling horror writer today. Personally, I'm not a big horror fan (I prefer SF or Fantasy), but I have read a couple of his books. His books are well plotted, with real contemporary characters and really great pacing (although I've found some of his later books to be too long). My favorite Stephen King work is "The Mist", a truly scary short novel.
