Water surfaces were one of the entrances into a separate world. Tu Mu says in a poem:

	    	"Partaking of the surface quality of jade
		expressing the contemplating mood of the lotus pond
		in the stillness of the early dawn, in the deserted garden,
		crystal dew collects in the basin. (...)
		One could mistake its mirror-like surface 
		to be a porthole into another universe."
